Scientific Background
There is a large scientific community within the UK whose work focuses on the nervous system. Many of these groups use animal and cell models performing in vitro and in vivo experiments to understand how the nervous system develops and functions normally and the mechanisms involved in neuronal diseases. Traditionally much of this work has been based on physiological studies though more and more biochemical approaches and studies are being performed which have uncovered many of the molecular mechanisms that contribute to neuronal disease. Despite this increased focus on molecular mechanism, biochemical neuroscientists are not well served in the UK with meetings that focus on their work. This meeting will encompass mechanisms of gene expression at different levels, beginning with transcription factor function through regulation of RNA splicing and decay and the regulation of translation. The meeting will bring together biochemists investigating mechanisms regulating gene expression in neuronal disease.
