Kinases in Diabetes

11—12 November 2004

Hulme Hall, University of Manchester, UK

Biochemical Society Focused Meeting

Proceedings will be published in Biochemical Society Transactions

Kinases play a key role in regulating cellular processes and their dysregulation is associated with disease states including cancer, inflammatory disorders, and diabetes. Over the last decade the feasibility of identifying cell permeable, small molecule inhibitors of these enzymes has been established within the pharmaceutical industry. More recently it has also been demonstrated that it is possible to activate protein kinases with small molecules e.g. the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase. Importantly, the first protein kinase inhibitors are now launched or in late stage clinical development for the treatment of a variety of cancers and chronic inflammatory diseases. In this meeting the presenters will review the various kinases thought to be involved in insulin signalling/diabetes and consider the potential to treat Type 2 diabetes by modulating kinase activity. It is hoped that this meeting will represent a good model for the potential of research on signal transduction to impact on currently unmet clinical needs.
