Antimicrobial peptides: mediators of innate immunity in the development of anti-infective, therapeutic and vaccination strategies

21 November 2005

New Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, UK

Biochemical Society Focused Meeting

Proceedings of invited speakers will be published in Biochemical Society Transactions

Mammalian antimicrobial proteins, including the defensins and cathelicidins contribute to host, innate, antimicrobial defence by disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane. Several members of the mammalian antimicrobial proteins have also been shown recently to have broader effects on host cells.

In this meeting, the structure and function of antimicrobial peptides will be considered and the mechanisms of how these molecules function to exert effects upon host defence and innate immune processes.
