Meeting Background
Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical and intercellular messenger with a rich biological chemistry. The discovery of the biological functions of nitric oxide in the 1980s came as a complete surprise and caused quite a stir. We intend to focus on the more biochemical aspects of NO research, and in doing so will bring together researchers from across phylogenetic divisions who are studying similar chemistry in different molecular and biological environments. The meeting will feature work on plant, animal and bacterial systems and will focus on the control of NO generation and destruction, in addition to its role in signalling and regulation in normal physiology and pathology. This is important since there are significant parallels between NO pathways in different systems. Recently the first plant NO generating enzymes have been identified and new pathways for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells to metabolize NO have been described. The meeting will address both progress in understanding traditional roles for NO, and other functions that are only now becoming apparent. We shall explore ways in which proteomics and structural work is driving forward our understanding of the ways in which NO acts to control the functions of other enzymes.
In addition to the invited speakers we hope to add a number of shorter talks, chosen from submitted abstracts. These are likely to be by younger researchers who are making outstanding contributions in the field.
Further information regarding the scientific programme and venue for the meeting will be available shortly.

The Royal Agricultural College
The Royal Agricultural College (RAC) is set on the edge of the historic Roman town of Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds countryside. The immaculate peaceful grounds mirror the style of an Oxford college, with a quadrangle and tower. It was the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world and was founded in 1838 and granted the Royal Charter in 1845. Much of the College is built in the Victorian Gothic style with two of the former old farm buildings remaining.

Cirencester and the Cotswolds
The Cotswolds are an area of outstanding countryside featuring many unspoilt market towns.
The historic Roman town of Cirencester (Roman name: Corinium) set in the Cotswold hills, which stretch from Bath to Bristol in the South and to Warwickshire in the North, is known as the 'Capital of the Cotswolds' and features attractions such as a Roman Amphitheatre, Corinium Museum and a nearby Roman villa.
It is a lively market town and a focal point for Cotswold life. It also has a long history, which is the pride of local people and visitors alike. Although there may be relatively little to see of the important Roman town which once flourished here and only one gatehouse of the wealthy medieval abbey, the town does boast the largest parish church in Gloucestershire and it has a wonderful array of fine Cotswold stone buildings.
In its historic areas it retains the architectural style and quality of the prosperous wool processing and cloth-weaving town of the 17th and 18th centuries. The town remains self-contained and unspoilt whilst at the same time playing its full part in providing services and community focus for its residents and the people of the district.
