Meeting
Background The robust and adaptable behaviours of cells and tissues depend on the operation of complex regulatory biochemical networks. The elucidation of the structure and functioning of such networks poses major experimental and theoretical challenges. Recently developed experimental techniques, such as large-scale profiling of gene and protein expression, provide unprecedented information on the molecular composition of cells. In parallel with experimental advances, computational schemes for the analysis of the vast amounts of data generated are continually being refined. A combined experimental-computational approach can, in principle, yield a detailed picture of the constitution of biochemical networks. If one principle can be seen to be emerging from successful interdisciplinary studies of this type, it is that even networks performing "simple" functions are remarkably complex, typically involving multiple interlocked regulatory loops. In many cases, the complexity of the network is such that it is impossible to provide an intuitive picture of the principles governing its dynamic behaviour; rather, it is essential to synthesise the experimental data into a coherent model of the underlying system.
Aims of the Meeting The aim of this meeting is to explore the progress made in this multi-disciplinary process, together with the major outstanding problems that remain to be solved.
Further Information Scientific enquiries should be directed to Dr. Nick Monk (n.monk@shef.ac.uk) or Dr. Neil Lawrence (neil@dcs.shef.ac.uk).

Travelling to Sheffield
By Air Manchester, Leeds/Bradford and East Midlands airports are all within a one hour travel time of Sheffield. Manchester Airport is served by many domestic and international carriers and has a direct rail link to Sheffield, which runs both day and night. Both London Airports (Heathrow and Gatwick) are reasonably accessible, and both involve just one change of train, you should allow at least 4 hours travel time between either of these airports and Sheffield.
Sheffield City Airport is only 15 minutes away from the main campus and has a regular daily scheduled flights. For more information regarding air travel to Sheffield from all major airports, please refer to the University website.
By Car Visitors to the University are advised to use public transport where feasible. Visitor car parking to the central campus is limited and by permit only.
The University recommend that unless you know the city well, when approaching from the north, east and south you approach Sheffield by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the A57 Snake Pass via Glossop. The recommended main routes to and from the University are indicated on the Central Sheffield Map.
From M1, M18 Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at Junction 33, following the City Centre signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57/A61 Parkway, which ends in a large roundabout - Park Square. From here, take the third exit, the A61 (S), along Sheaf Street, following the Ring Road signs, and passing the railway station on the left. Remain in the centre lane approaching the Sheaf Square roundabout, and then almost immediately bear right into Shorham Street, again following signs for the Ring Road. Turn right onto the Ring Road and now follow signs for the University. Continue straight on as far as the third roundabout, the Brook Hill roundabout. Take the first exit for the main Western Bank precinct and the fourth exit for the Applied Science Departments in Mappin (off Broad Lane).
From the West (A57) Follow the 'City Centre' signs. The route continues to Western Bank, with the University being signposted for the last mile.
By Rail Sheffield is at the heart of the railway network. Regular services operate between Sheffield and London St. Pancras (2.5 hours), Birmingham (1.25 hours), Leeds (1 hour) Manchester (1 hour) and Nottingham (1 hour).
There is a direct link from the railway station to the Sheffield Station Supertram stop via platform 6b (which is the far side of the station from the main entrance); the number 60 bus runs from outside the railway station. During the day, trams run every 10 minutes (15 minutes on Sundays). Tickets are purchased from the conductors on the trams. Alight at either the "West Street" stop for the Applied Science departments, or the "University of Sheffield" stop for the Western Bank precincts. Note these are both request stops. Please contact National Rail Enquiries for full details of services to Sheffield on +44 (0)8457 484950.
By Coach National Express operates a comprehensive coach service to most parts of the country from Sheffield Transport Interchange, Pond Street. The fastest service to London takes approximately 3.5 hours. The number 60 bus runs from the Transport Interchange, and there are Supertram links via the railway station (platform 6b) and Commercial Street.
