RNA Structure and Function: a joint Biochemical Society/Royal Society of Chemistry Focused Meeting

4—6 December 2004

Michael Swann Building, University of Edinburgh, UK

Meeting Background

Professor Jean Beggs has been awarded the 2004 Novartis Medal (given in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development of any branch of biochemistry). Jean Beggs has made a great contribution to the current understanding of RNA splicing and to the development of yeast as a model organism. Early in her career, in 1978, she was the first to devise an efficient host/vector system for the cloning and expression of eukaryotic genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a development that had a profound effect on biochemistry. The same 1978 paper described a transformation procedure for introducing recombinant DNA into yeast cells. By 1980 she had introduced the rat beta-globin gene into Saccharomyces, the first functional testing of a gene from a higher eukaryote in yeast. Since these pioneering developments, she has genetically manipulated budding yeast to help our understanding of the mechanism of RNA splicing, a highly complex process. Jean Beggs is Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Edinburgh.
