Meeting Background

Systems biology has almost as many definitions as there are practitioners. Basically, it is concerned to bring together information on the constituent parts of a biological system genomes, proteomes, data on interacting proteins, data on control and regulation, metabolomes, structures at various size scales, and rates and put the information together to obtain a better understanding of how the system as a whole functions. The system can be a complete organism, or a constituent part of one, such as the mitochondrion. Systems biology therefore requires at the very least integration of biological knowledge, high-throughput technology, and computational techniques. This meeting brings together leading researchers in these different areas, with the aim of asking where Systems Biology is going. The meeting allows time for discussion and reflection, and is intended to ask such questions as: Can we ever know enough about a cell or organelle to model it effectively? If so, what do we need to do to get to this position? What new technologies and disciplines do we need to make this work? What new opportunities will it open up, for example in drug design?

Manchester, Leeds/Bradford and East Midlands airports are all about an hour's travel time from Sheffield.

Manchester Airport (Tel: +44 (0) 161 489 3000) is served by many domestic and international carriers and has a direct rail link to Sheffield both day and night.

East Midlands Airport (Tel: +44 (0) 871 919 9000)

Leeds/Bradford (Tel: +44 (0) 113 250 9696)

London Heathrow (Tel: +44 (0) 870 000 123) and London Gatwick (Tel: +44 (0) 870 000 2468) are reasonably accessible by rail with just one change of train. We recommend you allow at least four hours travel time between either of these airports and Sheffield.

Travelling to Sheffield by car

Please note that the prices/fares below are approximate examples and are therefore subject to change. Please confirm with the driver/company prior to travel

By car
We recommend that unless you know the city well, you should approach Sheffield from the north, east and south by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the A57 Snake Pass via Glossop.

From M1, M18
Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at Junction 33, following the city centre signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57 Parkway, which ends in a large roundabout - Park Square.
From here, take the third exit, the A61(S) along Sheaf Street, following the ring road signs, and passing the Railway Station on the left. Bear left at the Sheaf Square roundabout and almost immediately bear right into Shoreham Street, again following signs for the ring road. Turn right onto the ring road and now follow signs for the University. Continue straight on until the third roundabout, the Brook Hill roundabout. Take the first exit, following signs for Glossop A57, passing the main University Western Bank precinct.

Continue straight on past the Childrens and Weston Park Hospitals along Whitham Road. At the next junction (with traffic lights), turn right up Crookes Road. Continue up the hill and the entrance to Tapton Hall is about 100 metres on the left after the sharp bend.

From the West (A57)
Follow the signs for the city centre until you come to the Crosspool shops (Crosspool Tavern on your left) and take the immediate left onto Lydgate Lane. Continue until you reach a main junction (Next to the Grindstone Pub) bear right and the entrance to Tapton Hall is about 40 metres on the right.

Tapton Hall car park
After registering and unloading you will need to leave your vehicle in the Tapton Car Park situated on Taptonville Road. Turn left out onto the Main road again and take three more left turns into the Car Park. Pedestrian access back to the accommodation blocks is via the path and steps in the corner of the car park.

Unfortunately, Sheffield suffers from its fair share of auto crime. Please do not leave any valuables in your car, and make sure it is locked and preferably immobilised.
