Meeting Background

The principal aim of the meeting is to provide an opportunity for researchers and students to meet and listen to international leaders and to showcase neurodegenerative research in Ireland.
Extracellular fibrous amyloid deposits or intracellular inclusion bodies containing abnormal protein fibrils characterize many different neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease and the prion diseases. There is strong evidence to support the idea that the accumulation of protein aggregates in the brain plays a seminal role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. As such amyloidogenesis is a rational target for therapy. The aim of this Focused Meeting is to highlight cutting-edge research centred on the processes leading to amyloid production and its ensuing toxicity. The invited speakers will address these issues from a diversity of approaches involving genetics, cell and molecular biology, physical biochemistry and the use of transgenic animal models. Special reference will be made to the amyloid b-precursor protein, Parkin, a-synuclein, tau, PrP, and various interacting proteins and enzyme that act on disease-associated proteins.
