Registration at the meeting:
Registration will take place in the Upper Foyer of the Conference Centre on Monday 21 November from 10:00 - 11:00. Meeting literature and badges will be issued to all delegates. Badges must be worn at all times.

The registration desk will remain open for the duration of the meeting at the following times:

Poster Abstracts

Poster abstract submission has now closed

Has my abstract been accepted?
After submitting your abstract you should receive a submission number which will identify your abstract. If you do not receive a submission number then please email meetings@biochemistry.org immediately. Approximately 2 weeks after the abstract submission deadline has passed, you will receive an email informing you whether your poster has been accepted.

Posters will be on display in The Hub on 21 and 22 November.

A Poster Session and Wine Reception will take place on Monday 21 November from 18:00 to 19:30 in The Hub

Each poster has been assigned a number, which appears alongside its abstract in this book. Presenting authors are requested to stand alongside their posters during the poster session.

A poster board, size 1.8m high x 0.84m wide and Velcro to mount your poster will be provided at the meeting. Posters can be mounted from 7am onwards on 21 November and must be removed by 15:00 on Tuesday 22 November. The Society cannot be held responsible for lost or damaged posters.

All posters will be available to view online prior and after the meeting on the Society website.

This Biochemical Society Focused Meeting is being held at the Manchester Conference Centre

The Conference Centre is in a prime location in central Manchester just a 2/3 minute walk from Manchester Picadilly Station and is easily accessible from all over the UK.

Car Parking
Charles Street multi-storey car park for around 700 cars is adjacent to the Weston Building. Guests can purchase Car Parking vouchers from the Hotel/Conference reception at a cost of 7 for up to 10 hours and 9 for up to 24 hours.

For added security, guests should try and park on the top two floors, as these are isolated by electric shutters at around 20:00 each night.

Brochures of most of the citys local attractions are available at the front desk. Directions and maps are also available.


Accommodation

Bed and breakfast accommodation for residential delegates will be provided (on Monday 21 November) at the Days Inn Hotel which is within the complex of the MCC

Getting to the Manchester Conference Centre

By Air
Manchester Airport (telephone: +44 (0) 161 489 3000) is located approximately 8 miles from the Manchester Conference Centre.

Getting from Manchester Airport to the Manchester Conference Centre
By train
- trains run from Manchester Airport to Manchester Piccadilly railway station (approximate journey time: 20 minutes, approximate cost: 6 return). From here the Manchester Conference Centre is a 3/4 minute walk away. Please print out the map for directions.

By taxi - Manchester Airport has taxi ranks at all terminals (approximate journey time: 25 minutes, approximate cost: 10).

Most firms provide a safe and reliable service but there are a lot of unlicensed and bogus mini-cabs around - so it is wise to remember these guidelines.

Hackney Carriages / 'black cabs' (identified by the 'TAXI' sign on the roof) can be easily flagged down from the pavement.

Private Car Hire Services (including mini-cabs) can only be booked in advance by telephone. Both types display official licence plates on the outside of the vehicle and all legitimate drivers carry identification cards. It is advisable never to get into a private hire car/mini-cab you have not ordered.


By Coach
There are good express connections to Manchester from most towns and cities in Britain, plus international routes from Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.

The National Express coach station is located in Chorlton Street, Manchester City Centre.

From Chorlton Street attendees can either catch a taxi or walk to the Manchester Conference Centre which takes about 10 minutes.

By Train
Manchester has three main train stations, Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria, all are located near the City Centre.
From all stations attendees can either catch a taxi which will take about 10 minutes and cost approximately 6 or a local bus (for further information see local bus information below).
From Manchester Piccadilly - attendees should walk to the Manchester Conference Centre which takes about 3 or 4 minutes
From Manchester Oxford Road - buses depart from Oxford Road.
From Manchester Victoria - attendees are advised to catch the metro to Piccadilly Gardens bus station and walk to the Conference Centre from here.

Student Travel Grants

Students can apply for a Travel Grant if they are a member of the Biochemical Society by the poster abstract submission deadline (26 September 2005).

The maximum grant available is 150 and includes:
Registration fees (up to 50)
Accommodation (up to 50)
Travel (up to a maximum of 50)

The following principles apply to application for a Student Travel Grant:
Students can only apply for one Student Travel Grant in a year.
Students are not eligible for a Student Travel Grant if they have already received funding from the General Travel Fund in that same year.
All student members of the Biochemical Society are entitled to apply for these Travel Grants and this entitlement will extend to PhD graduates for two years after graduation and to foreign student members in respect of travel in the UK and Irish Republic.

How to apply:
Applicants must apply to attend the meeting using the Delegate Registration Form and submit this along with the grant application. Grant applications received four weeks prior to the meeting will be available for collection at the meeting; however, you may apply for a grant at the Registration Desk, or up to four weeks after the meeting.

Subject to approval, applicants will receive a cheque for the appropriate amount. The maximum amount for travel expenses that will be reimbursed will be at the level of the current Young Persons Railcard fare. If the application does not use up the full amount of the Grant the balance cannot be transferred to another meeting.


Payment of fees

All payments must be made prior to the Conference.

Refunds

Cancellations will be accepted in writing until Monday 7 November 2005 (subject to a 15 cancellation fee). After this date, neither full or partial refunds can be given.


Confirmation email

All registered delegates will be sent a confirmation email to confirm registration details. This email should be checked carefully to ensure that all requirements are correct. In particular, the spelling of names and affiliations should be checked, as this information will be used to create badges.
Confirmation emails also act as a receipt, and should also contain venue maps and delegate information. Please bring the email with you to the conference.

Official Letters of Invitation

Official letters of invitation, which are intended to assist with administrative arrangements in certain countries will only be issued when the individual has completed the following criteria:

1) Submitted an abstract which has been approved by the scientific meeting organizer for inclusion into the relevant meeting

2) Sent a letter from the head of their academic department on University headed paper saying why they need to attend the meeting in relation to their research

3) Registered and paid for the meeting

Such letters do not imply commitment of financial or other support by the organizers.
