Intercellular signalling in plants

4—5 September 2006

Firth Court, University of Sheffield, UK

Meeting background

In the last five years there have been major advances in our understanding of plant developmental signaling pathways. The Arabidopsis genome sequence has greatly assisted the identification of components in hormonal and environmental signal transduction pathways. There have been high profile papers in Science, Nature and Cell detailing genes involved in leaf shape, symmetry, cell patterning and differentiation, and these continue to be priority areas for the BBSRC. The interaction between environmental signals and plant developmental pathways is an emerging theme which this meeting will address and which has received increasing support from NERC. Despite its international importance, there have been no scientific meetings focused on this subject in the UK for several years.

The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Firth Court is one of the original University buildings dating from 1905 and was opened by King Edward VII. It is named after a local steel magnate, Mark Firth. With its red brick ivy-clad facade, large quadrangle and castled towers, Firth Court is one of the University's most recognisable buildings.

Firth Court stands at the heart of the University campus, adjacent to the Union of Students, computer centre and the Library, five minutes from Goodwin Sports Centre and 15 minutes from the city centre.

For more information on the university, please go to the www.shef.ac.uk.
