3rd Focused Meeting on PI3K signalling and disease

6—8 November 2006

Bath Assembly Rooms, UK

Flyer

See the meeting flyer here.

Meeting background

The signalling cascade controlled by the family of PI3K lipid kinases has evolved over the past 15 years into an area of intense research activity in both academic and pharmaceutical arenas. It is now clear that PI3Ks are involved in the regulation of a plethora of functional events. Despite the rapid advances in our understanding of the importance of this pathway, there are still a number of areas which are the focus of activity :

(i) elucidate the role of individual PI3K isoforms and regulatory lipid phosphatases in specific functions of distinct cell types

(ii) investigate whether discrete 3-PI lipid products can control different effector functions activated by single receptors;

(iii) identify novel effector and regulatory elements associated with fine-tuning of the signalling pathway;

(iv) identify whether dysregulation of individual PI3K isoforms and/or downstream components can be linked with with distinct pathogenic end-points;

(v) validate drug targets within the signalling cascade and design of selective drugs with therapeutic application.

The intense activity within this field means that there are rapid developments in technology and knowledge. For example, user-friendly and more accurate assays will improve our ability to detect PI3K activity in primary non-transformed cell lines. Moreover, the generation of mutant mice with cell specific and conditional gene deletion of one or more components of the PI3K signalling cascade offer powerful tools with which to assess importance of this pathway in physiological settings and models of disease.

As a consequence, over the next 12-18 months we expect massive progress in our understanding of the biochemical events associated with this pathway and the relevance to physiology and disease pathogenesis. This knowledge will be of enormous interest to researchers in the field and a meeting dedicated to this branch of the phosphoinositide field will prove to be a timely platform for data dissemination, as well as a forum for debate/discussion and general advancement of the field.

Venue

The Bath Assembly Rooms are situated in the heart of Bath and were designed by John Wood II in 1769 and opened in 1771. The Assembly Rooms are composed of four rooms, the Ball Room, Octagon, Tea Room and Card Room. All were used in the eighteenth century for dancing, music, card playing, tea drinking and conversation. As a National Trust property they are open to the public every day (except the 25 and 26 December) with free entry.

The Bath Assembly Rooms are also home to the Museum of Costume. This extensive and fascinating display covers the history of fashion from late 16th Century. From 1 August 2005 until 31 December 2006 a special exhibition entitled 'The Nureyev Style' can be found. Its a special display of world famous ballet star Rudolf Nureyevs costume, fashion and textiles.

Bath itself is a beautiful city, located just 100 miles from London. It's compact size means that a wide variety of restaurants, theatres, cinemas and pubs are all readily accessible on foot. Shopping in Bath is a delight and there is a vast range of shops to cater for everyone's needs.

Student travel grants

Focused Meeting Travel Grants

The grant available for application for a 2-day Focused Meeting includes:
Registration fees (up to 50)
Accommodation (up to 50)
Travel (up to a maximum 50)

The following principles apply to application for a Student Travel Grant:

1. Students can apply for a Travel Grant if they are a member of the Society by the closing date for poster abstract submission for the particular meeting. In this case 4 September 2006.

2. Students can only apply for one Student Travel Grant in a year.

3. Students are not eligible for a Student Travel Grant if they have already received funding from the General Travel Fund in that same year.

4. All student members of the Biochemical Society are entitled to apply for these Travel Grants and this entitlement will extend to Ph.D. graduates for two years after graduation and to foreign student members in respect of travel in the UK and Irish Republic.

How to apply

A registration form for the Meeting should be completed and submitted to Portland Customer Services (details below). A copy of this form should also be sent to the Meetings Office (address at bottom of page) along with the student travel grant application form.

Grant applications received four weeks prior to the meeting will be available for collection at the meeting; however, you may apply for a grant at the Registration Desk, or up to four weeks after the meeting.

Subject to approval, applicants will receive a cheque for the appropriate amount. The maximum amount for travel expenses that will be reimbursed will be at the level of the current Young Persons Railcard fare. If the application does not use up the full amount of the Grant the balance cannot be transferred to another meeting.

Poster abstract submission

Online poster abstract submission is open.

How will you know if your abstract has been accepted?

After abstract submission you should have received a submission number which will identify your abstract. If you did not receive a submission number, then please email meetings@biochemistry.org immediately. Approximately 2 weeks after the abstract submission deadline has passed, you will receive an email informing you whether your poster has been accepted.

Poster size: 1m x 2m PORTRAIT.

Travel to Bath by air

The airport closest to Bath is Bristol International Airport approximately 20 miles away. An express coach service connects the airport to the Bristol Temple Meads Rail Station and a timetable for this service is available. Once in Bristol, buses, taxis and trains are frequently available for you to complete your journey to Bath.

For those arriving into Heathrow Airport, Bath is easily accessible by both train and coach. Reading RailAir operates every 20 minutes from Heathrow terminals 1,2 and 3 directly to Reading train station. This journey takes approximately 40 minutes. Trains run regularly from Reading to Bath Spa and times can be found from either the First Great Western website or by calling National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

For those arriving into Gatwick Airport it is possible to use a direct coach service to get from Gatwick to Heathrow to connect with the transport services outlined above. Where possible between 3.5 hours and 4.5 hours should be allowed for this journey. As an alternative it is possible to take the Gatwick Express to London Victoria. From here take the District or Circle underground lines to London Paddington where direct trains to Bath Spa run regularly.

Travel to Bath by train

Bath Spa mainline station is on the London Paddington to Bristol line. Very frequent services run to London, a journey of approximately 90 minutes. Bristol, with connections to the Midlands, the North and the South West is usually a 15 minute journey.

More information can be found on the National Rail website, including timetable information and fares. Alternatively you can call National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.
