On leaving the station turn right into Pancras Road remaining on the Kings Cross side of the road. Follow the road north until you reach a crossroads. Turn left by crossing Goods Way and Camley Street. Follow the pavement through the tunnel to arrive back on Pancras Road. Cross the road and turn right. Cross the road once more at the pedestrian crossing immediately opposite St Pancras Parish Church (the oldest in London!).

London airports and connections

Heathrow - Situated at the end of the Piccadilly line, Heathrow is convenient for tube travel direct to Kings Cross Station. The journey takes approximately 60-65 minutes from Heathrow to King's Cross but is relatively inexpensive. Alternatively the Heathrow Express to London Paddington only takes 15 mins and is a short underground journey to Kings Cross using the Hammersmith & City line or take a black cab.

London Stansted - Operates the Stansted Express to Liverpool Street Station where you can use the Hammersmith & City, Metropoliatain or Circle lines to Kings Cross.

Gatwick - Take the Gatwick Express into London Victoria then the Victoria line to King's Cross or take a black cab. The second option is to take the (slower) First Capital Connect service (every 20-30 minutes) direct to King's Cross. Note: because of the distance from Gatwick to Central London, the use of a taxi is definitely not recommended!

London Luton Airport - Take the train from Luton Airport Parkway to King's Cross. Note: There are several rail operators from Luton Parkway Station. National rail enquires will be able to give timetables and prices for travel to London.

London City - Take the Docklands Light Rail service to Canning Town Station then the London Underground to London King's Cross using the Jubilee and Northern lines.

London taxis

Black cabs

Taxis come into their own at night, although prices are higher. Cabs are available for hire when the yellow sign above the windscreen is lit; just stick your arm out to signal one.

Fares are metered, with a minimum charge of 2.20, and increments of 20p for each 219m (after the first 438m). There are no additional charges for extra passengers or luggage. You can tip taxi drivers up to 10% but most people round up to the nearest pound.

Hailing a taxi in popular nightlife areas of London such as Soho late at night (and especially after pub closing time at 11pm) can be tricky. If you do find yourself in any of those areas, signal all taxis even those with their lights off. Many drivers are very choosy about their fares at this time of night.

Minicabs

Minicabs are now fully licensed and are cheaper, freelance competitors of black cabs. Minicabs cannot legally be hailed on the street they must be hired by phone or directly from one of the minicab offices (every high street has at least one look out for a flashing orange light). Licensed minicabs carry their licenses in their car and are also displayed in the operator's office.

Unlicensed minicabs are illegal. You may be approached by unlicensed minicab drivers seeking fares; its advisable to avoid this as there have been a number allegations of assault made against unlicensed cab drivers.

Minicabs dont have meters, so its essential to fix a price before you start (its therefore not usual to tip minicab drivers). Make sure you bargain hard, as most drivers start higher than the fare theyre prepared to accept.

Ask a local for the name of a reputable minicab company, or phone a large 24- hour operator. Alternatively, check if the operator is licensed by calling Transport for London +44 (020) 7222 1234.

Women traveling alone at night can choose Ladycabs (Tel: +44 (020) 7254 3501), which has women drivers.

Freedom Cars (Tel: +44 (020) 7734 1313) caters for the gay and lesbian market, although gay couples are extremely unlikely to experience open homophobia from drivers of black cabs.

Driving in London

London is readily accessible from the UK motorway network with the M1, M2, M3, M4, M11, M20, M23, M25 and M40 motorways in or near London as well as a multitude of major A-roads.

All of Londons motorways intersect the M25 orbital motorway. As expected, there are good road connections with the local airports and relevant ports. The points of arrival are also well served by car hire companies.

If driving into central London then it is essential to remember to pay the Congestion Charge which covers central London from Kennington and Bermondsey in the South to Kings Cross/ St Pancras in the North and Hyde Park in the west to Shoreditch and Spitalfields in the east. For a comprehensive map of areas covered by the Congestion Charge then please contact Transport for London.

The Congestion Charge operates between 0700-1830 Monday to Friday (public holidays excluded) and is 8 per car per day. Evenings and weekends are free. The Congestion Charge can be paid online, in selected shops and petrol stations, by post, by sms from your mobile phone or by phone on +44 (0)20 7649 9122.

Parking in London can be difficult and is particularly restricted between 0830 and 1830 Monday to Friday and from 0830 to 1330 on Saturdays. Many of London's roads operate 'Pay & Display' schemes, which can prove expensive for extended stays.

In addition, there are car parking companies operating in London with properties throughout the city. Two of the larger ones are Masterpark and National Car Parks (NCP). Masterpark is a service provided by the City of Westminster and there are 18 sites situated throughout central London. NCP runs around 100 car parks in London.
