Travelling to the venue
By rail: York is on the main East Coast Line from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Fast trains leave from both North and South at frequent intervals. There is also a direct service across the Pennines between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport. The University is 2 miles from the railway station and delegates are advised to take a bus (No. 4) or taxi to the campus. An online rail timetable is available to help you plan your journey.
By air: There are 4 major airports within 2 hours drive; Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and Humberside. There are also train connections available to York Railway Station. For more information contact Railtrack directly +44 (0) 8457 48 49 50.
Alternatively, there is further information on the university website about travelling by air.
By taxi: A journey by taxi from the railway station to the University will take approximately 15 minutes. There is a taxi rank just outside the station. This should cost approximately £7.
By bus: You can reach York by coach from many destinations around the country. National Express have an online timetable and have a bus stop at the railway station.
The bus from York railway station to the University if the No. 4. The scheduled journey time from the station to Heslington (York Campus) is 20 minutes.
By car: The easiest route to the University is to take the outer ring road (A64 on the south and east sides of the city, A1237 around the north and west) to the junction with the Hull/Bridlington roads (A1079/A166). Turn off at the exit marked University and follow the signs past Grimston Bar and down Field Lane to University Road. This route avoids the City centre and known traffic black spots.
The nearest Park and Ride to the University is Grimston Bar, off the A1079.
All car parks have bays reserved for disabled badge holders, for whom parking is free. Others have to pay before 18:00. There is an additional number of specified disabled parking bays marked on the map.
The university campus contains a number of car parking facilities, however you will require a parking permit. The permit is £9 for the duration of the conference. This can be ordered when you register and will be given to you at the conference (Note, the parking permits can be purchased with the Biochemical Society and not with the University directly).
By bike: The University is well served with cycle paths and is currently improving cycle access and storage facilities. Cycle racks are available in more parts of campus, see cycle storage for more information.
The City Council provides free copies of cycle route maps around the City of York and there is a network of paths on campus.

Tweeting and blogging at Biochemical Society conferences
Tweeting and blogging at Biochemical Society conferences
With increasing frequency, conference attendees at scientific conferences are using Twitter or blogs to share and highlight interesting information discussed at conferences, and also to network with each other. The Biochemical Society has created the following policy with regards to the use of networking sites at Biochemical Society conferences.
The Biochemical Society’s Twitter and blogging policy
Harden Conferences
Proceedings and abstracts of Harden Conferences are unpublished, in order to promote the exchange of novel information and ideas. Delegates are asked to respect the closed nature of the conferences, and not to report information discussed via Twitter, Facebook, blogs and similar social networks.
Focused Meetings and Annual Symposia
The Biochemical Society encourages the discussion of its conferences via Twitter, Facebook and similar social networks. In order to promote discussion and the exchange of information, delegates who wish to tweet are asked to use the Biochemical Society hashtag:
#biochemsoc
Speakers will be made aware of this policy, and have the right to ask delegates not to disseminate their research via the Internet. If a Speaker makes this request, delegates are asked not to discuss the relevant work in this way. Delegates are respectfully asked to refrain from communicating using mobile devices whilst lectures are in progress.

Joint Society for Experimental Biology and Biochemical Society CV Clinic
A free two hour CV Clinic will be held at 12:30 on 24 March 2010. This is open to PhD students or young researchers working in the Biosciences, and delegates at the Linked Focused Meeting.
This workshop will show you how to present yourself at your best to future employers/funders whether you are aiming for academia/research, a science-related or non-related career. This interactive workshop will give you the opportunity to examine job descriptions, review your own experiences and skills and to tie this all together in a personal CV to ensure that you are ‘selling’ yourself to the best of your abilities.
If you are not attending the Systems biochemistry Linked Focused Meeting, please email conferences@biochemistry.org to request a CV Clinic registration form. Attendance at the CV Clinic will also be free of charge for non delegates, however a £10 administration fee will be taken if you do not attend the CV clinic.
