Pre-doctoral Meeting, 18 December 2000

19—21 December 2000

University of Sussex

Venue

The Societys 672nd Meeting is to be hosted by the University of Sussex School of Biological Sciences, located at Falmer on the outskirts of Brighton. The campus is nestled in a fold of the South Downs and has the distinction of being situated in a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most requirements can be met on campus at the two general stores, newsagent, post office and pharmacy. Other facilities include the University bookshop, banks and sport centre (including gym and sauna), launderette and health centre.

Please note that the University of Sussex is located near to but is not the same as and is separate from the University of Brighton.

Brighton

Easily accessible from the campus by car, train and bus, the cosmopolitan town of Brighton, with its Regency architecture and lively sea front, offers the amenities and entertainment you would expect from Britains leading seaside resort.

Travel

Falmer train station is opposite to the main University entrance and is well served by frequent local trains from Brighton and Lewes (about 8 minutes from either direction). Access to Sussex University campus is by foot and involves an underpass and steps - there are no taxis at Falmer. The walk to the residences from the station takes about ten minutes. Alternatively, delegates may travel as far as Brighton or Lewes and either take a taxi or, at Brighton, walk to the Old Steine for a bus to the University (see below for details).

Trains run from Gatwick airport direct to Brighton and Lewes. From Heathrow delegates will need to take London Underground to Victoria Rail Station and then the train directly to Brighton. Alternatively, coaches run from both Gatwick and Heathrow Airports to the centre of Brighton (from Heathrow this is a good option if you have lots of luggage).

Bus number 25 runs between Brighton (Old Steine) and the University and goes up through campus to the North end where the accommodation is located. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. The Old Steine, where the bus stops are located, is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the train station, towards the sea front (maps will be sent to registered delegates).

For delegates travelling to Sussex University by car, it is located on the main A27 road between Brighton and Lewes, about four miles from the centre of Brighton and the same distance from Lewes and there is ample car parking space on the campus. Maps will be sent to all registered delegates.

Rooms have been booked in student halls of residence, where each single study bedroom is equipped with a washbasin and a telephone. Bathroom facilities are shared between 12 rooms. There is a porters desk and television room in each of the Houses. The Houses are located at the northern end of campus; approximately 10 minutes walk from the main entrance.

Delegates will not be able to check into their rooms of residences before 12.00hrs on the Sunday or Monday. Delegates are also asked to vacate their rooms by 09.00hrs on the day of departure and return their keys to the porters desk.

Registration

On the day of arrival delegates entering the campus by bus/taxi are advised to travel with luggage and report to York House reception for their accomodation details and keys before returning to register.

Biochemistry at Sussex

The Biochemistry Group at Sussex occupies a strong position among UK biochemistry departments. It forms the core of a much larger biochemistry community, centred in the Graduate Research Centre in Biological Sciences, which includes not only many staff with biochemical interests in both the Biology and the Chemistry Groups, but also most members of relevant research centres on the campus, e.g. the MRC Cell Mutation Unit, the Trafford Centre for Graduate Medical Education and Research, the Sussex Centre for Neuroscience and the new centre of excellence, the Centre for Biomolecular Design and Drug Development.
