Covering Letter

The covering letter should be used as an extension of your CV and a quick way for employers to decide whether you are the right candidate for the job. Make sure the letter is persuasive and tailored to the particular position you are applying for. Your covering letter should be no more than an A4 page with the same layout and format as your CV. Generally you should stick to three or four main personal qualities that you would like to discuss further in the interview.

Covering letters are best constructed in three main paragraphs:

  • Firstly, state your reason for writing - "I am writing with reference to your recent advertisement on the Evolution web site for the position of research assistant (ref. xyz)".

  • The second paragraph should be your selling point, or how your CV meets the needs specified in the advert. You need to address relevant points outlined in your CV and those that you would like bought up in the interview.

  • In the third paragraph you should prompt for a further action - "I would welcome the chance to meet with you" or "I am available for interview immediately"

An example of a CV and covering letter can be found on the SRG web site
