Student's reports (2007 round)
This summer 15 excellent undergraduate life scientists (and their supervisors) were awarded studentships to experience 10 weeks in the lab. Tough competition surrounded the application deadline and the review panel struggled to pick out the best project structures, students and science. The chosen hypotheses, battled with over the summer break, surrounded many areas of cutting edge biochemical research with project topics ranging from osteoporosis, cancer therapies and diabetes to environmental toxicology and bacteria-aided digestion.
Placements like these involve hard work from both student and supervisor but there are many rewards. What better chance for undergraduates to gain insight into the world of The Lab where ‘problem solving leads to achievement… or a dead end’? What better chance for supervisors to inspire these talented students to continue into scientific research after graduation and for them, orchestrate a mini-project to tackle the ‘problem of the moment’?
Read these 15 exciting accounts of projects put together by 15 established members of the Biochemical Society’s network, executed by 15 new ones.
In preparation for next years round of applications (deadline: 29 February 2008) the Society has increased the funding to £40,000 to help satisfy the demand for even more of these worthwhile studentships.
In addition to the stipend, students also receive 3 years membership to the Biochemical Society.
