The Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group

(IT-supported Group)

13-15 September 2007

European Iron Club 2007

King’s College London, Guy’s Hospital Campus, London Bridge, London

The annual meeting of the European Iron Club (www.euro-iron.org) will be take place at King’s College London. The European Iron Club is dedicated to research into the biological inorganic chemistry of iron: its metabolism, pathology and clinical relevance to man. Its aim is to promote discussion and interaction between biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, nutritionists and clinicians working in all aspects of iron metabolism in biological systems. This year the meeting is being held in association with the Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group (IBDG). IBDG is an IT-supported group of the Biochemical Society. Submission of abstracts, for oral or poster presentation, are welcomed in any area of biological inorganic chemistry of iron.

    About the Group

The Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group (IBDG) serves the UK community of Inorganic Biochemists and Bioinorganic Chemists. The IBDG was founded in 1975 to encourage "activities relating to teaching and research concerning the biological function of those elements whose study is normally considered to be within the purview of inorganic chemistry".

As well as being a Biochemical Society IT-supported group, the IBDG is a subject group of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and part of the RSC Chemical Biology Forum. It is affiliated to the British Biophysical Society.

    Activities

The Group's activities include the organisation of at least one annual meeting, the publication of at least two newsletters per year, and a bursary scheme giving financial help to student members wishing to attend conferences.

    Recent successful conferences have included:

January 2007 - Imperial College London
Mechanisms of Iron-Induced Neurodegeneration: A Focus on Parkinson's Disease

January 2006 - Queen Mary, University of London
Metals and Radicals in Biology: Spectroscopic Insights

September 2005 - University of Nottingham
Dalton Discussion 8 Metals: Centres of Biological Activity

    Young Investigator's Award

We sponsor a Young Investigator's Award to highlight and promote the next generation of outstanding UK-based inorganic biochemists. The award is made every two years for outstanding contributions to any area of inorganic biochemistry or biological inorganic chemistry. In 2006 the award was shared between Dr Judy Hirst (MRC Dunn Human Nutritional Unit) for her application of voltammetric methods to study redox active centres in proteins and Dr Vasily Oganesyan (University of East Anglia) for his development of theory, analysis and computer simulation methods for advanced spectroscopic methods with application in the study of metal centres in metalloproteins.

    Membership

If you would like to join IBDG, click here. Membership (only £5 per year, £2 for students) entitles you to the newsletters and significantly discounted registration fees at our meetings. Student members are eligible for bursaries to attend our meetings.
