The Biochemical Society welcomes the appointment of Dr Patrick Vallance, currently President of Research and Development at GlaxoSmithKline, as the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser with effect from spring 2018.

The UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) is the personal adviser on science and technology-related activities and policies to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet; and Head of the Government Office for Science.

Commenting on the news, Biochemical Society Trustee, Professor Richard Reece, said: 

“The Biochemical Society welcomes the appointment of Dr Patrick Vallance to this important role. His extensive knowledge and experience from both academia and industry will serve him well. This is a critical time for science in the UK, but it is excellent news that a Life Scientist has been appointed as the Chief Scientific Adviser and we look forward to working with him. We wish him every success in formulating science policy and strategy.”
