Travelling to the venue

Keele is centrally located within the UK with excellent communication links for all types of travel.

 

The University is situated two miles (3.2km) west of Newcastle-under-Lyme on the A525 road to Whitchurch, Nantwich and Crewe.

 

By car:

Keele University is 2 miles west of Newcastle on the A525 Crewe/Nantwich road.

 

If arriving from the North on the M6, leave at exit 16 (Stoke North) and turn right (west) onto the A500 towards Nantwich where you will soon see signs to Keele.

 

If arriving from the South on the M6 leave the motorway at junction 15 (Stoke South) and head for Newcastle on the A34.

 

If arriving by rail, there are regular bus services from Stoke [First 25] and Crewe [D&G 85] - bus-stops are located opposite the station entrances.

By air:

Manchester Airport is the nearest to Keele and is about 35 miles (56km) away. The train journey from Manchester airport to Stoke-on-trent station takes approximately 1 hour.

 

By train:

Frequent, high speed services run from both London Paddington and Manchester Picadilly to Stoke-on-trent station which is approximately 5 miles from Keele University.

Registration fees and forms

Earlybird application deadline: 22 June 2011

Early application is now open.

 

Registration includes 4 nights accommodation in a single en suite room (22, 23, 24 and 25 August) and all meals (breakfasts, lunches, refreshments and evening meals) including the conference dinner on 25 August.

Members of the New Zealand Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are eligible to register at member rates. Please ensure you enter your membership number during registration.

All payments must be made prior to the meeting. Please note that invoices for registration fees will not be issued.

Confirmation email

At the final stage of the online registration process, all registered delegates will be directed to a confirmation page and receive a separate email to confirm registration details. This confirmation should be checked carefully to ensure that all requirements are correct. In particular, the spelling of names and affiliations should be checked, as this information will be used to create badges.

Confirmation emails also act as a receipt. Please bring a copy of the email with you to the meeting.

If you have not received a confirmation email two weeks before the meeting, please contact the Conference Office.


Registering at the meeting

Please bring your confirmation email to present at the registration desk at the meeting. Badges will be issued upon registering and, for security reasons, must be worn for the duration of the meeting.


Harden Bursaries

A limited number of bursaries are available to cover the cost of registration and/or travel to assist younger members of the Biochemical Society to attend this conference.

 

Preference will be given to senior graduate students and restricted to members of the Biochemical Society who have submitted an abstract for presentation at the meeting.

 

Applications for these places should be sent to the Biochemical Society from the applicant's supervisor and should be accompanied by an independent reference.

Poster abstract submission

Early application and abstract deadline: 22 June 2011

Abstract submission is now closed. If you would like to submit an abstract for this conference, please contact the Conference Office.


Abstract submission guidelines
The maximum number of words allowed in your abstract is 230 words. This does not include the title, authors and affiliations.
 
The preferred method for submission is to type your abstract straight into the online submission form using the buttons on the form to add special characters or formatting. However it is also possible to paste text from a word-processed document as long as formatting and special characters are added via the buttons on the online submission form.

Please do not include tables, figures or references as these will be removed before your abstract is published.

 

Has my abstract been accepted?
After submitting your abstract you should receive a submission number which will identify your abstract. If you have not received a submission number, then please contact the Conference Office.

Approximately 2 weeks after the abstract submission deadline has passed, you will receive an email informing you whether your poster has been accepted or not and informing you of your poster number and session time.

All poster abstracts will be available to view online two weeks prior to the meeting.

Poster Board size: 1m wide x 2m high (portrait).

Velcro to mount your poster will be provided at the meeting.

 

 

 

 

The Biochemical Society is working with the new open access poster repository, F1000 Posters, to host online the posters from this event.  Authors will be asked if they wish to deposit a PDF of there poster presentation(s) from this meeting during the abstract submission process.

 

Faculty of 1000 is expanding its award-winning post-publication literature evaluation service by including evaluations of posters from across the major life science and medical conferences. The Faculty of ~10,000 world-renowned experts will be regularly reviewing new posters deposited in F1000 Posters for selection and evaluation in F1000. The selection of poster PDFs for evaluation will bring the attention of a much wider audience than can be achieved by attending a single conference. 



 


Biochemical Society Centenary Poster Prize

To celebrate its centenary year in 2011, the Biochemical Society will award a prize of £200 to the best poster presented at this meeting by a researcher in the early stages of their career (post-graduate or first post-doctoral position).  The winning author will also receive an invitation to present their poster at the Biochemical Society Centenary Celebration event, and attend a celebration dinner, in London on 16 December 2011.

Cancellations will be accepted in writing until 10 August 2011, and a refund (less £15 administration charge) will be issued.

After this date, neither full nor partial refunds can be given. Please note that refunds of less than £15 cannot be issued.
 


Official letters of invitation

Official letters of invitation, which are intended to assist with administrative arrangements in certain countries will only be issued when the individual has completed the following criteria:

1) Submitted an abstract which has been approved by the meeting scientific organizer for inclusion into the relevant meeting

2) Sent a letter from the head of their academic department on University headed paper saying why they need to attend the meeting in relation to their research

3) Registered and paid for the meeting
Such letters do not imply commitment of financial or other support by the organizers


Tweeting and Blogging at Biochemical Society Meetings

With increasing frequency, conference attendees at scientific conferences are using Twitter or blogs to share and highlight interesting information discussed at conferences, and also to network with each other. The Biochemical Society has created the following policy with regards to the use of networking sites at Biochemical Society conferences.

Harden Conferences
Proceedings and abstracts of Harden Conferences are unpublished, in order to promote the exchange of novel information and ideas.  Delegates are asked to respect the closed nature of the conferences, and not to report information discussed via Twitter, Facebook, blogs and similar social networks.


Focused Meetings and Annual Symposia

The Biochemical Society encourages the discussion of its conferences via Twitter, Facebook and similar social networks.  In order to promote discussion and the exchange of information, delegates who wish to tweet are asked to use the Biochemical Society hashtag:

Speakers will be made aware of this policy, and have the right to ask delegates not to disseminate their research via the Internet. If a Speaker makes this request, delegates are asked not to discuss the relevant work in this way. Delegates are respectfully asked to refrain from communicating using mobile devices whilst lectures are in progress.

 


Continuing Professional Development

The 70th Harden Conference has been approved for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Society of Biology.  Participants can claim 120 credits for attending.  These points are valid if attendees are registered on the Society of Biology CPD scheme.  Approval signifies that the Society of Biology recognizes the 70th Harden Conference is of merit to the development needs of participants. Attendees can request a CPD certificate for this conference whilst completing the post event feedback questionnaire, which will be sent by email to all attendees shortly after the event.
