12th International Proteoglycan Conference

Organised by the Biochemical Society in collaboration with the British Society for Matrix Biology

Proteoglycans (PGs) are an exciting class of molecules with a huge variety of critical functions in cell regulation due to their functional interactions with protein partners. PGs are highly complex and functionally diverse molecules which are strategically positioned on the cell surface and in the matrix, and impact mechanistically on fundamental processes in health and disease. Increased understanding of their structure-function relationships is underpinning new insights into their roles in diverse disease processes (including cancer, neurodeneration and host-pathogen interactions) and in normal repair mechanisms (such as angiogenesis, wound healing, nerve regeneration and stem cell regulation). This is now leading to the emergence of novel therapeutic strategies and applications in bio-inspired biomaterials.

The meeting programme will focus on research areas at the forefront of the field, covering basic aspects of PG research (including new technologies and tools), their functions and mechanisms of action, and advances in translation to biomedical applications.

Planned sessions include:

  • Hot Topics
  • New Technologies & Tools
  • Translational advances
  • Structure-Function Relationships of proteoglycans
  • Matrix Biology
  • Cell Signalling & Trafficking
  • Proteoglycans in Ageing & Chronic Diseases
  • Proteoglycans in Cancer & Inflammation
  • Proteoglycans in Stem cells, Biomaterials & Regenerative Medicine
  • Proteoglycans in Neuroscience
  • Biosynthesis of GAGs/PGs
  • Proteoglycans in Healing & Infectious Diseases
  • Chemical Biology of GAGs

Oral communication slots are available at this meeting. All attendees, particularly researchers in the early stages of their career, are invited to submit a poster abstract for consideration as an oral communication. You can submit your abstract here.

Biochemical Society Bursaries

We offer a wide variety of grants and bursaries to help you attend this event and save money on registration fees!

Harden Bursaries: We offer financial support to help graduate students and those who have gained their PhD in the last 5 years attend Harden conferences. Apply during the abstract submission process.

Care and Assistance Grants: We recognise that care needs and requirements can vary from individual to individual. These grants provide additional funding to cover participation in a Society meeting or training course. The grant is open to all additional support needs, including but not limited to, carer support, childcare, disability, and accessibility needs.

Stay Connected Bursaries: If you are currently on a career break, or have recently returned to work, these bursaries make it easier for members to remain engaged with the scientific community by covering the registration fees. Requests for financial support towards accommodation and travel will also be considered.

General Travel Grants: Funding of up to £750 is available to Postgraduate, Early Career, Full, and Emeritus members to assist with the cost of face-to-face attendance at scientific meetings.

Not a member of the Biochemical Society? Join today and save up to £100 on your registration fee.

BSMB Bursaries

The British Society for Matrix Biology are also offering bursaries to help members attend this event. Applicants should be non-tenured scientists, preferably at an early stage of their research career and unlikely to have access to travel funds. For this reason, preference is given to young researchers such as graduate students and early post-docs (less than 6 years post-doc). In the case of application numbers exceeding available bursaries, the quality and impact of the work to be presented together with previous record of BSMB bursary support will also be taken into account.
