For the purposes of this grant, a low-income economy is classified as either Low-income or Lower-middle-income economies as classified by the World Bank

Please note that the grant is not intended to support a direct research collaboration between two laboratories, but to enable the export of expertise from a non-high-income economy laboratory to be disseminated in a low-income economy.


Travelling from a high-income economy to a low-income economy

The purpose of these grants is help research capacity building in low-income countries. The committee will look favourably on applications that give a detailed strategy for dissemination of the knowledge to as many researchers as possible within the low-income economy. 

It is imperative that there is clarity as to the aims of the visit. Please indicate when applying what you hope to achieve from the visit and how you intend to measure success.

Demonstrate an understanding of the equipment available in the host country and indicate how the techniques and skills taught will be used to help research capacity building within the host country.

Please give details of the programme of teaching and any outreach activities that will help you achieve the aims of the visit.

It must be clear that thought on how follow-up activities and sustaining a relationship with host country will be maintained.

A breakdown of the costs involved in the visit and a justification for these costs. 

During the application process you will be required to provide a letter of support from the host laboratory. This letter should include:

  • Dates of the visit
  • What techniques, skills and knowledge that the host hopes to acquire from the visit 
  • How many people will be trained on the intended skills and techniques
  • How the host intends to disseminate the knowledge further after the visit has taken place and the expected benefit to the host country

You must also provide an intended schedule for the visit to show how you will maximise the visit to achieve the aims of aiding learning and skills development in the low-income economy country. This should include a detailed strategy for disseminating the knowledge gained.

economy countries

The applications must include a detailed strategy for dissemination of the knowledge to as many researchers as possible within the low-income economy country.

The committee look most favourably on applications which benefit more than one institution.

You must also provide an intended schedule for the visit to show how you will maximise your time during the visit to achieve the aims of aiding learning and skills development in the low-income economy country. This should include a detailed strategy for disseminating the knowledge gained.
