Ahead of the General Election, Dr Mark Downs, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Biology, has sent a letter on behalf of their Member Organisations and the whole bioscience community to all Members of Parliament (MPs) who are planning to stand for re-election.

The letter asks MPs to ‘address the important challenge of ensuring that UK science remains vibrant and strong’ through ensuring the UK has an excellent environment for science (with access to the best people, collaborations, investment and regulations) as well as always considering the scientific evidence relevant to policy decisions.

The letter also highlights a number of examples illustrating the importance of UK bioscience, including:

  • 83% of Biological Science assessed in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 was judges as world-leading or internationally excellent.
  • UK academic bioscience research led to 689 spin-out companies between 2002 and 2014.
  • Health and biomedical life sciences industry has a turnover of £51bn, employing 176,000 people.

We encourage our members to use the letter to highlight the important of UK bioscience when engaging and talking to their local MPs.
