The latest issue of our Society-owned community magazine, The Biochemist, is out now! 

For our latest issue, Antimicrobial Apocalypse, our featured articles explore polymers as a potential avenue to address AMR, repurposing non-antimicrobial drugs, and a One Health perspective on this global issue.   

Science Editor of The Biochemist, Dr Kakoli Bose (ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre, India), shares her thoughts on this issue in her latest editorial: 

“In this month’s issue we focus on novel solutions to the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which continues to endanger lives worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 4.7 million deaths in 2021 were associated with bacterial AMR. The overuse and misuse of antimicrobial medicines have accelerated the spread of drug-resistant pathogens, making AMR a critical concern for healthcare systems and societies globally. 

As drug-resistant pathogens increase, treatment options for patients with infections are becoming increasingly limited. Exploring alternative strategies to combat AMR is therefore more important than ever. The articles featured in this issue highlight several promising approaches.”

This issue includes helpful education and careers resources, with a beginner’s guide to building a community of inclusive leadership in the biosciences. We’re also excited to hear from our 2026 Biochemical Society Early Career Research Award winner, who shares a reflection on his career and moving to independence.   

Alongside themed feature articles, this issue contains updates and accounts from our members on how our support has helped to share their research and develop their skills, as well as meeting reports from Society-led meetings and sponsored events.
