Grants and Bursaries

The Biochemical Society offers a programme of grants supporting research, attendance at scientific conferences and the sponsorship of events.  
Members of the Biochemical Society are eligible for FEBS Fellowships.

Important note: Predatory conferences


Presenting your work at a conference is an excellent way to share your research and raise your profile in the scientific community. But there is a growing problem to look out for—predatory conferences. Much like predatory journals, predatory conferences seek to charge high registration fees while offering little value in return for attendees and presenters.

The Biochemical Society will only consider member grant applications for organisation or attendance of meetings believed to be genuine.

BURSARIES

HARDEN BURSARIES

These bursaries help students and scientists in the early stage of their career attend Harden Conferences, our residential research conference series focusing on specific specialist topics.

Registration and abstract submission must be completed by the event early registration deadline.

STAY CONNECTED BURSARIES

Our Stay Connected Bursaries make it easier for members to remain engaged with the scientific community, whether you are on a career break or have recently returned to work. Stay Connected Bursaries cover the cost of registration to face-to-face and online Biochemical Society events and courses.

  • One month prior to the start date of the event (if there is no early registration deadline)

CARER SUPPORT GRANTS

We recognise that care needs and requirements can vary from individual to individual. Carer Support Grants are available to members of the Biochemical Society who require support with additional care costs associated with their participation in a Biochemical Society event or course.

RESEARCH GRANTS

SUMMER VACATION STUDENTSHIPS

The Biochemical Society Summer Vacation Studentships offers funding to undergraduate students to carry out a summer laboratory placement.

ERIC REID FUND FOR METHODOLOGY

This fund is available to provide modest financial support for benchwork. The emphasis is on methodology, with a preference for cellular or bioanalytical work.
Deadline
Due to the uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic the Society decided not to open for applications in 2021, they are now scheduled to open in 2022.

SCIENTIFIC OUTREACH GRANTS

Grants of up to £1,000 are available for innovative and engaging events or activities that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to school children, young scientists, or the general public.

EVENTS SPONSORSHIP

Grants of up to £500 available to assist members with the independent organisation of scientific meetings, training events, single lectures, or small events.

Grants of up to £100 are available to Student Members to support events organized by student societies relating to molecular bioscience.

Grants of £500, £750, £1000 or £1500 are available to members to assist with the costs of hosting a seminar series with guest speakers throughout the year.

This scheme provides grants of up to £500 to individuals, groups, charities or not-for profit organizations to support and address issues relating to diversity in science. Non-members may apply.

UNDERGRADUATE RECOGNITION AWARDS

Awarded by the Society’s Local Ambassadors to acknowledge an outstanding undergraduate within their institution.
Local Ambassadors can submit applications at any time throughout the academic year. Awards issued on a first-come-first-served basis.
