Sarah's story - Emeritus Membership

"I have been a member of the Biochemical Society throughout my entire career and moved onto the Emeritus membership category when I retired. The Biochemical Society offer conference funding to Emeritus members, and I was delighted to receive a grant to participate at RNA UK in January 2026. Attendance at this meeting was extremely useful for me to keep up with recent developments in the RNA field, as I am on a number of grant awarding committees. *Duration, cost and eligibility

Emeritus membership is for our long standing members who have retired from their professional careers and who have been Full members of the Society for over 10 years.

1-year membership

Emeritus membership costs just £32.50 for 1 year. Members on 1-year memberships can apply for member-exclusive grants after 12 months of continuous membership.

3-year membership

Or, if you sign up for 3 years, this costs £88 (10% discount). 3-year members can apply for member-exclusive grants* earlier, after 6 months of continuous membership.

*Please note that all grant funding is awarded by the Grants Committee based on a successful application in line with each grant's eligibility criteria.

Low- and middle-income countries

We offer a 50% discount on membership fees for those residing in low- and middle-income countries, as classified by the World Bank. Find out more about discounted membership on our member FAQs page.

Tax Relief

If you pay your own Society membership subscription and are a UK taxpayer, you can claim the tax back on your annual membership fee. Further details can be found on gov.uk.
