Accessibility statement
The Biochemical Society and Portland Press are committed to ensuring equal opportunities in the molecular biosciences and strive to ensure we meet AA standards for accessibility under the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.x)
Biochemical Society
In line with our strategy, the Biochemical Society has undertaken a full audit of the site as we work in tandem with Portland Press toward remediating any deficiencies in accordance with these WCAG standards. This is including but not limited to: improvements in contrast and colour use to improve legibility for users with colour vision deficiencies; keyboard navigation; audio and video; page titling; labelling; and ARIA enhancements.
Known limitations on the Biochemical Society site include:
- videos of webinars do not currently provide transcripts on site and are only accessed via You Tube, Vimeo at present
- we have a backfile of Pdfs which means the text is visible but not available to most screen reading tools. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause some readers; however, we are formulating a plan to remediate this and will update this space when we have a timeline for this work
Portland Press
We want everyone who reads our journals to be able to find what they are looking for and read it with ease. This year we have undertaken a full audit and VPAT process of the whole Portland Press site for the first time.
We will be working with our platform host and production vendors to remedy a number of the deficiencies highlighted in this year's VPAT, including but not limited to: improving the structure of table data and semantic markup of these; improvements in contrast and colour use to improve legibility for users with colour vision deficiencies; page titling; link naming; label and language setting; and ARIA enhancements.
Known limitations of our current site include:
- videos of experiments are most often recorded without sound, and no alt-text alternative is available for the majority of these at present
- we have a substantial backfile of publications (pre-2005) which are primarily available as image-only Pdf. This means the text is visible but not available to most screen reading tools. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause some readers, however, we are formulating a plan to remediate this extensive list of articles and will update this space when we have a method and timeline for this work
Additionally, for immediate ease-of-use both the Biochemical Society and Portland Press are proud to introduce the UserWay widget (found in the bottom-left corner of your screen on both websites) to provide support for users, everything from a screen reader or contrast adjustment to wider text spacing, and even colour adjustments.
