Spotlight on our committees – Non-Executive Director
News, Oct 09 2025
Our mission promotes the sharing of knowledge and expertise to support the molecular bioscience field across all career stages, which could not be possible without the hard-work and determination of those that sit on our committees, boards and panels.
Every month, we will be introducing you to one of our committee, board and panel members to gain insight into what our committees do, the benefits to the community, and the benefits to the individuals who participate.
Dr Sarah Greaves sits on Portland Press Ltd Board; the Board of Directors of the Society’s trading subsidiary Portland Press, who set and evaluate the overall strategic and operational strategies for the company, in collaboration with Publications Committee and the Editorial Boards.
We asked Sarah three questions about her role as Non-Executive Director and what she has gained from the experience.
What inspired you to get involved with the Society and how has the experience matched or exceeded your expectations?
As a biochemist by training, and a publisher since finishing my post-doc, this felt like a natural way to step back to my roots as an undergrad and support a learned UK society and their publishing press. I have thoroughly enjoyed relearning biochemistry and working with the team during unprecedented times in scholarly publishing.
Can you share a specific moment/accomplishment in your role(s) that made you feel rewarded?
Working with the team to support the key transition to open access and seeing the organisation lead the way within the UK learned society publishing press has been particularly rewarding.
What skills and experiences have you gained from being part of the Society?
Collaborating with others is a key part of my role. It’s great to work with different teams, learning more about how learned societies run and operate, and meeting my fellow board members and other Non-Executive Directors.
