Spotlight on our committees – Society President

News, May 28 2025

Our committees, boards and panels all play a vital role in helping us to advance our mission to promote the sharing of knowledge and expertise to support those at all career stages across the molecular biosciences.

Our work would not be possible without the hard-work and determination of those that sit on our committees, boards and panels.

Every month, we will be introducing you to one of our volunteers to gain insight into what our committees do, the benefits to the community, and the benefits to the individuals who volunteer.

This month we’re hearing from Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, Society President and Chair of Council of Trustees. Our Council set and drive our strategy every year and hold ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the Society’s activities and Julia chairs this Board, ensuring the Society’s activities meet their charitable aims. We asked Julia three questions about her role as President and what she has gained from the experience.

What inspired you to get involved with the Society and how has the experience matched or exceeded your expectations?

"I was pleased and honoured to be asked to be President.  Pleased because it gave me the opportunity to give something back to the community within which I had my career, and honoured when I looked at the list of previous Presidents.

The heart of the Biochemical Society is the science community, and I have seen first-hand the support the Society gives to many scientists. I am particularly proud of the support for those starting out on their career."

Can you share a specific moment/accomplishment in your role/s that made you feel rewarded?

"The President’s role is to work with the Chair and Council to ensure we support the aims of the charity and that we can continue to flourish in a difficult and ever involving climate.  I am pleased every time we come together to renew our strategy and manage our finances so that we can continue to invest in our community, and when I see the commitment and skill of Society staff.

Perhaps the time I feel most pride is when I see the calibre of our scientists through our many awards, whether they are for lifetime achievements or for those just establishing their careers."

What skills and experiences have you gained from being part of the Society?

"I enjoy being part of a successful community. My role allows me to see the quality and range of the science and the excellence of the scientists.

It enables me, at the end of my career, to continue to learn new things, to keep abreast of new developments and to contribute to the community that has given me so much."
