Harden Bursaries
Our Harden Bursaries help students and scientists in the early stage of their career attend Harden Conferences, our residential research conference series focusing on specific specialist topics.
Not a member? Why not join today and receive discounted registration fees and the opportunity to apply for a bursary to help cover registration, travel, or accommodation costs!
Bursary funding available:
- The exact value of Harden Bursaries and the criteria for which it can be spent varies for each Conference.
- Harden Bursaries are often over-subscribed, and many applications are not accepted. Please do not make travel arrangements until you have been informed, in writing, that your application has been accepted.
- If awarded, bursaries will be paid after the conference has taken place, and attendance has been confirmed.
How to Apply
The option to apply for a Harden bursary is within the event registration process.
To be eligible to apply:
- You must be a member of the Biochemical Society by the abstract deadline. If you are not a member, join today.
- You must not have received another Harden Bursary in the same calendar year.
- You must be a graduate student or have gained your PhD in the last 5 years. Due to limited numbers, preference is given to senior graduate students.
- You must submit an abstract to the conference.
Registration and abstract submission must be completed by the event’s early bird deadline.
Please note: abstract submission does not count as registration. You will need to register and pay for the conference separately.
Please keep the following in mind when applying for a Harden bursary:
- There is limited funding available for each Harden Conference and funding is not guaranteed.
- Applications can only be accepted towards Biochemical Society Harden Conferences. View our upcoming events calendar.
- We accept applications from anywhere in the world, however please note that we are unable to pay grants to recipients in jurisdictions, countries or regions subject to sanctions, embargoes or other political trade restrictions put in place by the United Nations, the EU or the UK.
- The Biochemical Society does not fund any applications made retrospectively.
- Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
- We encourage applicants to apply for funding from other funding bodies (including your own institution) to accompany your application. This should include the amount requested, the name of the organisation/grant scheme applied for, and the outcome (or date outcomes are expected). You agree that if the funding received exceeds the total needed for this meeting, you will return any unspent funds to the Biochemical Society.
- A Harden bursary is non-transferable and can only be used to support the attendance of the named applicant. Applications can not be made on behalf of other individuals, or to support group attendance.
If successful:
- The Biochemical Society cannot be held responsible for any of the Recipient’s debts or liabilities.
- The Biochemical Society logo will be provided by the Biochemical Society and the Recipient must ensure the logo is featured on the poster or presentation slides presented at the conference or workshop. Recipients must provide a photo of the poster/presentation slides at the meeting to demonstrate the use of the Society logo.
- The Recipient is required to send a 200 word report about their experience at the conference. This report should provide an overview of the themes of the meeting, highlight any key presentations or sessions or relevance, and the main outcomes of the meeting on their future studies and/or career. The report may be published on the Biochemical Society website, social media channels or considered for publication in our community magazine, The Biochemist.
