This Open Access Week we’re celebrating our milestone year in our open access (OA) journey. 2025 marks the inaugural year of our Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, allowing us to offer fee-free OA publishing across five of our titles for this year.  

S2O is a model we chose to adopt, as it provides an equitable path to OA, relying on the support of institutions and their commitments to meet our yearly threshold. Every year a decision is made on our titles and, if the threshold is met, that year’s content is published fee-free OA for all authors. This removes barriers of access to research and broadens dissemination globally.  

As a Society publisher, all our activities are geared towards facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange, which is why we’ve committed to this to support equity amongst the whole community and drive the future of science to inspire innovation. Our journey to a funder and institutionally compliant OA publisher started in 2009, with the first of our titles moving to a hybrid model and has evolved since this with the introduction of Read & Publish in 2020. We now offer four OA pathways: guaranteed OA (Read & Publish); conditional OA (S2O); Article Publishing Charge (only in Bioscience Reports); and Green OA.   

This first year we’ve been incredibly grateful to be able to facilitate the global sharing of our high-quality, high-impact submissions to advance the field with limited barriers to access.  

We look forward to continuing our journey in future years. The decision for 2026 content will be announced in March 2026, and we encourage everyone to look out for the announcement.
