News, Mar 05 2026
We’re delighted to announce that Professor Luciane Vieira de Mello, University of Liverpool (UK), has been awarded the FEBS Education Award 2026. This achievement will be formally presented at the 50th FEBS Congress in Maastricht (4-8 July 2026).
Representing the strength and educational prominence of our molecular biosciences’ community, we’re thrilled that out of 11 strong candidates from across Europe, our nomination for Luciane was selected following a rigorous evaluation process.
Reflecting on the announcement and the significance of the award, Luciane said:
“I’m truly honoured to have been selected as the recipient of the FEBS Education Award this year. This Award highlights the outstanding calibre of educational work in our sector, and I am truly grateful to be recognised by FEBS and our community. I share my thanks to the Biochemical Society for nominating me for this achievement and I look forward to continuing my work in the field.”
We put forward our nomination based on Luciane’s dedication to the Society across our committees and panels, most recently as a Society Trustee and Training Theme Panel Chair after serving in the role for 6 years before stepping down at the end of 2025.
Over the years she has helped drive the Society’s strategy forward and aided in the development of a high-quality programme of scientific meetings and training, supporting her far-reaching impact on how biosciences are taught, learned, and valued. Luciane also exemplifies this ethos in her role as Professor of Biosciences Education and Deputy Dean of the School of Biosciences at the University of Liverpool.
Professor Ferhan Sağın, Chair of the FEBS Education and Training Committee, commented:
“I have known Luciane for many years through her work within FEBS, and I have had the privilege of seeing how she thinks and how carefully she builds. What distinguishes her is depth. She does not chase visibility; she strengthens foundations. She studies, tests, and refines. She listens closely and supports others generously. And she never loses sight of the purpose behind our work — educating the next generation of scientists.
Her approach reminds us that real innovation is steady, thoughtful, and sustained. That is rare. It has been a pleasure to witness her journey.”
We’re pleased to celebrate alongside Luciane in this well-deserved recognition of long-term, evidence-based and transformative contributions to education, reflected by innovative educational scholarship and dedication to strategic leadership throughout her career.
