Sponsorship for events

Single lectures and small events

Sponsored Event Grants provide sponsorship of up to £500 to assist with the independent organisation of single lectures or small events such as postgraduate research days.

Our Sponsored Event grants are available to support both face-to-face and virtual meetings. We’ve previously funded travel bursaries for students and ECRs to attend, travel and accommodation for keynote speakers, consumables and worksheets, and more!

We particularly welcome applications for events that are cross-institutional and regional, and student-focused. All funding sought should be used to support the science and cannot be used to cover catering or venue costs.

Please note that this fund does not support events for school students, which are covered under Scientific Outreach Grants.

Next deadline

1 August 2025 for events taking place after 1 September

To be eligible to apply:

  • Applicants must be a current Postgraduate, Early Career, Full, or Emeritus member of the Biochemical Society.
  • Your event should take place at least one month after the deadline.
  • Applicants can only apply for one Sponsored Event Grant per calendar year.

Applications are assessed according to three main criteria:

1. Intended audience

  • Who is the intended audience for this event?
  • How many attendees are you expecting?
  • What is the age range/career level of the audience?
  • Are you planning any specific sessions that you think will be particularly useful to students?
  • What will the benefit of attending this event be for the audience?

2. Cross-institutional networking opportunities

  • Does the event support cross institution networking?
  • Have efforts been made to engage multiple institutions or groups?
  • Will this event benefit other institutions (rather than just the host)?
  • Is there a clear promotional strategy for engaging and attracting delegates from other institutions?

3. Financial need for support

  • A clear and detailed breakdown of costs should be included.
  • Details of existing funding available from your Institution or other organisations.
  • Why funds are being sought from the Society and why the level of support is being requested.
  • What the requested funds will be used for e.g., travel bursaries for students and ECRs to attend, travel and accommodation for keynote speakers, consumables, or worksheets.

Applications are considered three times a year, the deadlines for which are:

  • 1 January

  • 1 April

  • 1 August

Early applications are encouraged to allow for the review process to take place ahead of the start of the event.

Please note we aim to send round the outcome of applications three to four weeks after the deadline of the round that has been applied to.

Please keep the following in mind when applying for a Sponsored Event Grant:

  • The Recipient must act in accordance with government legislation and is responsible for obtaining any licenses, permissions and insurances that are necessary by law to carry out their event.
  • We accept applications from anywhere in the world, however please note that we are unable to pay grants to recipients in jurisdictions, countries or regions subject to sanctions, embargoes or other political trade restrictions put in place by the United Nations, the EU or the UK.
  • The Biochemical Society does not fund any applications made retrospectively.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
  • A Sponsored Event Grant is non-transferable and can only be used to support the event outlined in the original application.

If successful:

  • The Recipient must badge the event, session, or speaker as ‘sponsored by the Biochemical Society’.
  • The Biochemical Society logo and/or marketing materials will be provided by the Biochemical Society and the Recipient must ensure these are displayed at all times, either online or in print.
  • The Biochemical Society cannot be held responsible for any of the Recipient’s debts or liabilities.
  • The Recipient is required to send photographs and a report of approximately 200 words providing an overview of the attendance figures and demographic of the event, and outlining why the meeting was timely, relevant, and important e.g., what were your aims and ambitions for the meeting and were they accomplished? The report and photographs may be published on the Biochemical Society website, social media channels or considered for publication in our community magazine, The Biochemist.
