Protein Purification and Biophysical Characterisation 2025

This two-day training course, hosted at the University of Bedfordshire’s STEM Building, aims to expose participants to the latest hardware required for protein purification and biophysical measurements. Attendees will gain hands-on experience of cell lysis using the CF1 cell disrupter from Constant Systems; protein purification using AKTA systems and Unicorn software; the analysis of protein – ligand interactions using the NanoTemper Monolith and the new multi wavelength Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Optima analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC). Short lectures will provide background theory on the techniques used.

In this meeting we will discuss research covering all five families of small G proteins, to generate new ideas, collaborations and scientific strategies from diverse inputs. This will include the Ras family, involved in cell growth, the Rho family, which drive cytoskeletal rearrangements, the Arf and Rab families, which play a role in vesicle trafficking and Ran, which is responsible for nuclear transport.

R for Biochemists 201 is the Biochemical Society’s second R course, building on the content of R101 for those wishing to extend and develop their knowledge of R. The course has a focus on proteomic data analysis and uses modern data analysis concepts, packages and visualisations. R for Biochemists 201 teaches participants the key concepts of tidy data, about good coding practice such as developing reproducible workflows, and how to create more complex data visualisations in R.
