Spotlight on our committees - Society Chair

News, Jun 17 2025

Our mission promotes the sharing of knowledge and expertise to support the molecular bioscience field across all career stages, which could not be possible without the hard-work and determination of those that sit on our committees, boards and panels.

Every month, we will be introducing you to one of our volunteers to gain insight into what our committees do, the benefits to the community, and the benefits to the individuals who volunteer.

As Chair of the Society, Professor Richard Reece leads the Executive Management Committee in reviewing, instructing, and governing the ongoing activities of the Society in line with the scientific, community and operational strategy set by the Council of Trustees, which Richard also sits on.

We asked Richard three questions about his role as Chair and what he has gained from the experience.

What inspired you to get involved with the Society and how has the experience matched or exceeded your expectations?

“I have always believed that learned societies play a vital role in shaping the research landscape, advocating for the discipline, and supporting researchers at all stages of their careers. My involvement with the Biochemical Society was inspired by a desire to contribute to the wider scientific community beyond my own institution, and to support efforts that uphold the value of biosciences in public policy, education, and innovation.

I was particularly drawn to the Society’s commitment to promoting excellence in molecular biosciences, advancing equity and inclusion, and engaging with early career researchers. These values closely align with my own.

Serving in leadership and ambassadorial capacities, including as Chair, the experience has exceeded expectations - not only in terms of the impact we have achieved collectively, but also through the calibre of the people I have worked alongside.”

Can you share a specific moment/accomplishment in your role/s that made you feel rewarded?

“One particularly rewarding moment was the appointment of a new CEO following a comprehensive and inclusive recruitment process. Supporting this transition allowed me to reflect on how the Society is positioning itself for a sustainable and forward-looking future. Seeing the organisation continue to thrive under new leadership was both gratifying and affirming.

More broadly, leading the Society through a period of change - while maintaining strong engagement with our members and partner organisations - has been immensely rewarding. I have been particularly proud of our advocacy efforts, including work to engage parliamentarians and policymakers on issues facing the biosciences sector.”

What skills and experiences have you gained from being part of the Society?

“My time with the Society has enriched my experience in governance, strategic planning, and change leadership. Chairing Executive Management Committee meetings, working with the Board of Portland Press, and navigating complex issues such as financial resilience and publishing ethics have, I believe, strengthened my capacity for balanced and informed decision-making.

It has also reinforced the value of listening - to members, to staff, and to external stakeholders and of fostering an inclusive culture where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but actively sought. I have gained a deeper understanding of the publishing landscape, science policy, and the operational realities of a membership organisation, all of which have informed my broader leadership practice.”
