In this webinar we heard from the 2022 AstraZeneca Award winner, Dr Sjors Scheres at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK.

Dr Sjors Scheres is a Research Leader at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and joint Head of the Structural Studies division. His main interests lie in the development of new methods for high-resolution cryo-EM structure determination, and their application to amyloid filaments. During his Award lecture, Dr Scheres discussed his latest developments in cryo-EM and their application to amyloids from human brain.

This webinar was chaired by Dr Kakoli Bose, Principal Investigator, Advanced Centre for Treatment Research & Education in Cancer, and Associate Editor of Bioscience Reports.

Alpha-synuclein, a central player in neurodegenerative diseases
In this webinar, we heard from the 2020 Thudichum Medal recipient, Professor Maria Grazia Spillantini. With her collaborators, Maria Grazia identified alpha-synuclein as the major component of the filaments that form the Lewy bodies in Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, and described one of the first mutations in the Tau gene leading to frontotemporal dementia and Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17.
